Animals rescued since December 2019
Why Bettas and Hermits?
Betta fish and land hermit crabs are sold as easy, beginner, easily replaceable pets. If it dies, you can get another for a few bucks. Chain pet stores encourage them to be sold as pets for young children or beginner pet owners. They are often displayed alongside small colorful plastic enclosures or enclosures that contain unnecessary, and oftentimes dangerous, supplies. In reality, these animals require a lot more than a kit off the shelf.
Misinformation is promoted by chain pet stores and other vendors and resources to continue the sale of overpriced and cheaply made enclosures that provide nothing beneficial for the animal.
Additionally, hermit crabs are taken from the wild to be sold as pets and bettas sold in chain pet stores are subjected to immense stress and are bred for quanitiy over quality.
About The Rescue
Shell & Fins Rescue started in December 2019. I recognized the need for small animal rescue in Arizona and decided on two very common pets that are often neglected, betta fish and land hermit crabs.
Most of the animals come from Craigslist, OfferUp, or Facebook Marketplace being rehomed in bad conditions. I typically pay $10-$20 per rescue and drive 30 to 60 minutes to retrieve them. I care for them for a minimum of 30 days to ensure they are healthy and ready to be adopted. Most fish go through a round of antibiotics and dewormer.
I aim to help more than just bettas and hermit crabs in the future, and I may occasionally have other small critters for adoption. My goal is to reduce the number of hermit crabs and bettas sold in pet stores by spreading awareness that adoption is an option.
